Before I leave I get from Scott the crucial record shops and bookshops to check out in Chicago: ‘Hyde Park Records on the South Side, and 57th Street Books – we’re on the South Side now, but way on the South Side. 606 is a great shop. There are so many record stores here, holy shit: Dusty Groove’s kind of a famous one.’15 I also ask for his proudest moment in amongst the 22 International Anthem records released (at this point) since 2014.

‘Man, oh, I feel proud all the time,’ says Scott, momentarily stumped. ‘We’ve done a lot of stuff that I didn’t even know was possible. We’ve done a lot in a short period of time, but, I dunno, working with Jaimie Branch was really life-affirming. She’s an artist who’s so incredible and hadn’t really got her due. And just to see the way she’s taken off since we put that record out … every new thing that she achieves, every new bit of attention that she gets is like, for me, personally satisfying. Because she’s just such a fuckin’ badass, man. She’s so incredibly talented and all she wants to do is make music …

‘Ben LaMar Gay is another one. It’s been really an honour to work with him. Everyone in Chicago knows it, but no one outside of Chicago knew who he was, so to see him getting the global attention that he deserves has been very satisfying.

‘I had a moment. We did a release show for Jeff Parker’s The New Breed in the summer of 2016. Jeff had a super-early flight to Los Angeles the next day, and after the show everyone was hanging, but Jeff had to pack up all the gear and load it up and it take it back to the Tortoise practice space, because he was borrowing all Tortoise’s gear for the show. He had to lock it up and do all that shit before he went home, just so he could get, like, one hour’s sleep before leaving for the airport. So I was, “Man, Jeff, I’ll take care of it. Just give me the keys to the space and I’ll pack all this shit up and take it there for you.” And he was, “Really?” [in a surprised tone]. “Yeah.” So he gave me the keys. Cool, sweet. So I drove all his band gear to Tortoise’s space, got there and loaded all of it in, then when I was walking out of the space I saw a stack of their merch sitting in a corner, all of their CDs, and I saw It’s All Around You, which was the album they were touring when I first saw them as an 18-year-old. So I picked it up and there I was, in Tortoise’s private space. I thought to myself, “I just put out a record with Jeff, whose music is so important to me – the reason I am even standing here today as a fan is because of the music that they made.
